Dame Elizabeth Anionwu OM DBE FRCN
Nurse, author, advocate and innovator
Dame Elizabeth has dedicated her life to the health and well-being of multi-ethnic communities. Beginning her career as a school nurse assistant for the NHS, she went on to establish the first nurse-led Sickle and Thalassaemia Screening and Counselling Centre in the UK in 1979, where she also became the first nurse specialist. A lecturer in both Child Health and Community Genetic Counselling and Professor of Nursing at the University of West London, Elizabeth founded the Mary Seacole Centre for Nursing Practice and led the Centre until her retirement. She is a Life Patron of the Mary Seacole Trust. Elizabeth has been widely recognised for her commitment to healthcare, education and leadership. She was awarded the Royal College of Nursing Fellowship in 2004, a CBE, Order of Merit and a Damehood for her services to nursing. Elizabeth is an inspiration to nursing and midwifery students across the country, including here in Greenwich.
Jason Brisbane
Former professional American footballer, educator, CEO of GB Wheelchair Rugby
Jason鈥檚 successful career in American football began when he represented Great Britain at youth and senior levels before joining the National Football League鈥檚 International Player Development programme. He subsequently became a linebacker in America鈥檚 NFL and enjoyed success with teams around the world. Jason joined the University of Greenwich in 2011 to complete his PGCE, before moving into roles that enabled him to combine his experience as a professional sportsman with his commitment to education and his dedication to encourage young people to participate in sports. As Head of Community and Grassroots Development at the NFL, one of the initiatives he introduced saw 10,000 children from across the UK participate in regional non-contact football tournaments. Jason鈥檚 ongoing commitment to building sporting communities is reflected in his work as CEO of GB Wheelchair Rugby and his role on the Global Institute of Sport鈥檚 Industry Advisory Board.
Rebecca Donnelly MBE
Founder of Fight 4 Change and former boxing champion
A former world Thai boxing and English national boxing champion, Rebecca turned her love of the sport into a thriving charity. In 2009, she set up Fight 4 Change, a non-profit organisation that uses boxing to engage with youngsters involved with gangs and criminal behaviour, inspiring them to make positive life choices. The impact of Rebecca鈥檚 work has been especially felt in south-east London. This is where the charity is based and where Rebecca was born and raised. She also gives back to the area through the Lambeth Young Advisors programme which is run by Fight 4 Change and led by young people who carry out peer-to-peer outreach work and discuss the community鈥檚 concerns with the police.
Mathurine Emmanuel
Filmmaker and teacher
Mathurine is a distinguished filmmaker who has won acclaim in the United Kingdom, United States and Caribbean. Her films explore inclusivity and culture through the sometimes-turbulent lives of people living in the Caribbean region. She has won and been nominated for multiple awards, including Best Documentary Feature at the 2004 New York International Film and Video Festival for her second film, Ribbons of Blue. Her other productions include Shantaye鈥檚 World, a Windrush story which premiered in the UK in collaboration with the University of Greenwich and the Social Caribbean Forum. As well as being a filmmaker, Mathurine has a long and distinguished career as a teacher. This began in an elementary school in her hometown of Desruisseaux, St Lucia, in 1978.
Joyce Fraser OBE
Volunteer, teacher and community leader
Joyce Fraser, OBE, is the Founder of the Black Heroes Foundation (BHF) which works to develop cultural awareness and respect, recognition and celebration of Black Heroes. Married to Peter 鈥楩lip鈥� Fraser, who was editor of The Voice and creator of the musical 鈥楤lack Heroes in the Hall of Fame鈥�, Joyce continued Peter鈥檚 legacy following his death by founding the community-based BHF in 2016. In 2022 she received an OBE for services to the Promotion of Black History and Heritage. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development. Joyce was a student at the University of Greenwich from 2012 鈥� 2016, where she pursued doctoral students in Education, following her MBA in Organisational Leadership. She has also been an Associate Lecturer with the Open University Business School since 2009. Spanning roles as community leader, teacher and keen student, Joyce pays forward her commitment to the benefits of education: in the last academic year the Black Heroes Foundation hosted two University of Greenwich placement students.
Dr Angela Herbert MBE
Transformational life coach and educator
Angela is an educator with an extensive career in the criminal justice system. She has a long history of supporting inclusivity, especially for people of African heritage. After more than a decade volunteering in a young offenders鈥� institution, she took up a senior role at a London prison before transferring to prison service policy in the Ministry of Justice. She currently chairs the Violent Crime Prevention Board and London Borough of Brent Police Independent Advisory Group. Among her other roles, Angela is Director of IOTC-Solutions, a company that uses coaching and mentoring to support individuals to improve their lives and the lives of others. In April 2021, she marked her 61st birthday by launching Made on Purpose, an organisation committed to social change for girls and women.
Michael Kelpie
Award-winning TV producer
Michael Kelpie has forged a hugely successful career at numerous UK production companies and broadcasters, including the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV. He is one of the UK鈥檚 leading TV producers and is founder of Potato, a production company within ITV studios. Potato produces over 350 hours of programmes in the UK and USA each year, including ITV鈥檚 The Chase. Michael鈥檚 success has been recognised with many awards and accolades, including a BAFTA in 2017. Michael graduated from the university in 1996 and features in Greenwich Portraits, our celebration of some of the university鈥檚 outstanding alumni. He is working with our new School of Stage and Screen and has volunteered to share his expertise in media and TV production.
Alice Moody
Teacher, Road Safety Campaigner and Volunteer
Alice gained her Teachers Certificate at Avery Hill in 1941 before pursuing a career as a primary school teacher and Headteacher. During her time at Staverton Primary School in Trowbridge, Alice led a successful campaign with local parents against the school鈥檚 planned closure, ensuring it remained a key part of the local community for future generations of children. Alice continued to teach on a voluntary basis after her retirement and to share her experience of being evacuated from the Blitz during World War 2 - a period during which she continued to teach. Alice is also an advocate for her community, supporting road safety campaigns in Bradford-on-Avon where she was also a town guide and volunteer at Holy Trinity Church. Alice recently marked her 102nd birthday.
Tessy Ojo CBE
Social change maker and charity CEO
Tessy has spent over two decades driving change for children and young people in the areas of social justice, youth leadership and social equity. She is the founder of Tessy鈥檚 Brunches, a mentoring forum for female self-improvement. As Chief Executive of The Diana Award 鈥� the only charity that bears the name of Diana, Princess of Wales 鈥� she has developed internationally recognised programmes that give young people skills to thrive and create positive change in their communities. She was the first British national to be honoured with the prestigious Martin Luther King Award, in recognition of her innovative approach to leadership and humanitarian work. She also holds non-executive director roles at several organisations with a focus on social good, including Comic Relief and the UK Council for Child Internet Safety.

Frazer Thompson
Frazer is the founder and former CEO of the Chapel Down Group plc, England’s largest wine producer. A former Greenwich student, he graduated with a BA Hons in Business Studies in 1981 and went into a career in the drinks industry. At just 29, he was made a director of Whitbread, where he went on to lead the team that created the famous Boddingtons advertising campaign and draughtflow widget. After a stint at Heineken, working in Amsterdam, in 2001 he took a career risk to become CEO of the (then) small English wine producer, Chapel Down. During his 20-year tenure, he has listed the company and created a valuable business producing some of England’s finest wines. The business is now one of the LSE 1000 companies to Inspire Britain, a CoolBrand and a member of the Walpole Group. Frazer retired in 2021 and now spends his time working for a number of charities and is an investor in a fashion start-up.
Bernadine Evaristo OBE
Bernadine is a multiple award-winning author and was joint recipient of the Booker Prize in 2019 for ‘Girl, Woman, Other’. She was the first black woman and the first black British writer to win the prize. The novel also won the British Book Award for Best Fiction and Indie Book Award and was a Sunday Times ‘Book of the Decade’ and a Guardian ‘Book that Defined the Decade’. Born in Eltham and raised in Woolwich, Bernadine studied Community Theatre Arts at Rose Bruford College and gained a PhD in Creative Writing in 2013 from Goldsmiths, University of London. She is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University and President of the Royal Society of Literature. Bernadine founded the Brunel University African Poetry Prize in 2012 and The Complete Works Poets Development Scheme. She co-founded Spread the Word writer development agency and Britain's first black women's theatre company. Bernadine has taught creative writing since 1994 and has been awarded numerous writing fellowships and residencies.
Byron Cole
Byron is an award-winning entrepreneur, business start-up expert, and successful author of his book ‘Self Made’. In 2006, he founded the BLC Group - an umbrella company for businesses operating across a range of sectors including property services, construction recruitment, corporate and personal branding, employability skills, professional mentoring and business consultancy. Byron has spent much of his career using his business experience to mentor and support others. Since 2019 he has been co-chair of Evolve Housing + Support, a leading homelessness charity in London that provides housing and support to over 2,000 people each year. He is a School Governor of Harris Academy in Purley and he currently works with the University as a mentor.
Gary Pugh OBE
Gary Pugh OBE began his career as a forensic scientist in 1979. He worked for many years in government departments, including being seconded to the Science and Technology Group of the Home Office in 1990 to work on the development of the Forensic Science Service (FSS). He became a Director on the FSS Main and Executive Boards in 1999, during which time he acted as Senior Scientific Adviser to the HMIC on the ‘Under the Microscope’ inspection and was the FSS Board representative on the Home Office DNA Expansion Programme. In 2004 he took up the new post of Director of Forensic Services at the Metropolitan Police Service. Here, he developed, led and implemented major programmes of organisational change including introduction of new technology and accreditation to national and international scientific standards. He has been Chair of the National DNA Database Strategy Board and was the SRO for the strategic matcher project within the Home Office Biometrics programme. Gary has supported and worked with the university for many years. He was awarded an OBE in 2011.
Stephen Howlett CBE
Stephen has devoted his 42-year career to working in housing, for which he was awarded a CBE in 2018. He has held many senior positions including most recently as chief executive of Peabody for 14 years, one of the oldest and largest housing associations in London providing over 55,000 homes. Since retiring in 2017, he has undertaken a diverse range of roles including Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London and Chair of London South East Colleges, and is a trustee of Open City, London’s leading architecture charity. He has always had a particular interest in education and skills and joined the University’s Governing Body (previously known as the Court) in 2008. In 2013 he was elected as the University’s Pro Chancellor/Chairman of Court for four years. From 2017-2019 he became the University’s Pro Chancellor (Ceremonial) to deputise for Baroness Scotland who was Chancellor at the time.
Pamela Franklin
After leaving school with few qualifications and subsequently discovering that she was dyslexic and autistic, Pamela went on to successfully run her own IT and management training business for 25 years until illness forced her to change direction. She is currently a trustee of the Royal Garrison Church of Saint George and Chair of the Caribbean Social Forum, which she has led for six years, increasing the membership from 12 members to 600. It was awarded a National Diversity Award in 2017. Pamela has been a force for change in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, with her vision to support Caribbean older people with loneliness and dementia and a commitment to remember the Windrush Generation. She was the first woman in 20 years to open the International Slavery Day at the National Maritime Museum and was invited by the British Museum and Library to speak about the Windrush Generation. She has collaborated with the university on various community engagement projects and knowledge transfer partnerships supporting BAME and migrant groups, including the Food for Thoughts Memoirs exhibition and the Let Our Legacy Continue exhibition.
Terry Waite
Terry’s inspirational life has demonstrated bravery, morality and a commitment to education. His career has taken him around the world, including through Asia, Africa, North and South America and Europe where he advised on institutional change, health and education development. After witnessing the Amin coup in Uganda, he set up the Southern Sudan Project and was responsible for developing aid programmes there. In 1980 he joined the Archbishop of Canterbury’s private staff and in this role successfully negotiated the release of several hostages from Iran. In 1983 he again successfully negotiated for the release of British hostages, with Colonel Gaddafi in Libya. He himself was taken captive in 1987 whilst negotiating in Lebanon and was held for 1,763 days, the first four years of which were spent in total solitary confinement. Following his release in 1991 he wrote his first book and international best-seller, Taken on Trust. After his experience in captivity, he decided to commit himself to study, writing, lecturing and humanitarian activities. He was awarded an MBE in 1982 and CBE in 1992.
Peter Hazell
Peter is a chartered accountant and was previously UK managing partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has used his wide knowledge and experience of regulated bodies, strategic planning, insurance and asset management to support many businesses in non-executive director roles. He has also given his time as a trustee, including for the Oval Cricket Relief Trust, a charity providing aid and poverty relief to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters. Peter has provided many years of service to the University. He was a member of the Business School Accounting and Finance Forum before serving as a Governor between 2009-2019 – the maximum time a Governor can serve. In this role he provided wise counsel during a period of significant change at the university particularly in his role as chair of the Staffing Committee (later renamed the Nominations, Staffing & Remuneration Committee) for four years. Peter also sat on the Finance Committee, the Governing Body Long-Term Strategy Group and the Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee.
Emma Lawton
Emma is co-founder of purpose-led tech start-up More Human, founded in 2020 to reduce loneliness by empowering anyone to be a brilliant organiser of community events and clubs. A successful graphic designer, she was awarded the CharityComms ‘Inspiring Communicator of the Year’ award in 2015 and in 2019 she was shortlisted for a BIMA 100 ‘Woman of the Future Award’ in recognition of her work in shaping the future of Britain’s digital industry. Emma was diagnosed with Parkinson’s nine years ago at the age of 29 and regularly raises awareness about it through talks and workshops. She lives in Greenwich and has been actively engaged for many years with the university’s School of Design and Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She has inspired the development of the ‘diversity and inclusivity by design’ research group, motivating academics to develop research in the area of disability and design, accessibility and practice making, and inclusivity by creativity and also acts as a mentor to university students.
The RT Hon Stuart Lawrence
The Right Honourable Stuart Lawrence is an author, coach, public speaker and youth engagement specialist. As the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence, the British teenager murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993, he has spent much of his life campaigning for racism awareness. He has worked closely with the University of Greenwich for a number of years through his work at the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, particularly around the promotion of Stephen Lawrence Day each year on April 22nd. Stuart is the author of a children’s book ‘Silence is Not an Option’, which is interspersed with reflections on his brother’s life and murder. He has also had a 15-year career as a secondary school teacher in south west London, and has worked for the Home Office and BMP Belmarsh. Earlier this year it was announced that Stuart would become a Patron of the Black Curriculum.
Claude Ajit Moraes OBE
Claude has spent a 30-year career working in the areas of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, and campaigning on human rights issues. His past roles have included working as a National Equalities Officer for the TUC, Director of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, and Commissioner at the Commission for Racial Equality. Between 1999-2020, he was the lead Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Greater London Region, which included the 32 London Boroughs, City of London and London’s 72 Parliamentary Constituencies, which brought him into regular contact with the Royal Borough of Greenwich. He was the first MEP of Indian/South Asian descent and London’s first BAME MEP. Claude negotiated data privacy and anti-terrorism agreements with the USA on behalf of the European Parliament and chaired the GDPR legislation negotiations between member states and European Parliament. He was awarded an OBE in 2020 for public service and services to human rights.

Winston Branch is an internationally renowned visual artist whose works feature in the collections of 45 worldfamous institutions including the Tate, V&A, St Louis Art Museum MO, Museé des Beaux Arts in Algiers and the National Trust of St Lucia. Originally dubbed a ‘diaspora artist’ (he originally comes from St Lucia, West Indies), he quickly became a ‘citizen of the world’, living and working in numerous cities in the UK, USA, Netherlands and Germany as well as the Caribbean, creating an art with no geographical boundaries. He continues to be a generous supporter of young artists, especially through Chelsea Art Club and the University of Greenwich.

Linda Nicolaides

Linda Nicolaides is Principal Scientist and Quality Assurance Manager at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich. She is a passionate and committed food safety specialist and has been central to NRI’s world-leading contribution in food safety and quality for half a century. She launched the MSc Food Safety & Quality Management at the University of Greenwich which has been completed by over 600 students globally, many now leaders in the food industry. She has over 40 scientific publications and is currently researching reusable, biomaterial packaging for fresh meat and fish.

Professor Sir Richard Trainor KBE

Rick Trainor has been Rector of Exeter College, Oxford since 2014. He is also a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University and was Chair of Oxford’s Conference of Colleges 2017-19. Before that Rick was Principal of King’s College London for 10 years and is emeritus professor of social history there. Rick has held appointments at the University of Glasgow, where he was professor of social history, dean and vice principal, and at the University of Greenwich where he was vicechancellor 2000-04. Between 2007 and 2009 he was also President of Universities UK, the organisation representing heads of UK universities. A dual citizen of the US and the UK, he was knighted in 2010 for services to higher education.

Martin Riley

Martin has had a distinguished career in Marketing. His roles include Chief Marketing Officer of Pernod Ricard, International Marketing Director of Chivas Brothers and Irish Distillers and President of the World Federation of Advertisers. He currently provides advisory services to a range of companies, including several start-up businesses in the UK and North America. Martin is a member of the University’s Business School’s Advisory Board and has given several presentations to students and staff as part of the ‘Big Picture’ series. He has also spoken at the Greenwich Students’ Union and the University’s Marketing Society on Culture and Global Marketing of Brands.

Sir Leigh Lewis

Sir Leigh Lewis has dedicated his life to public service, holding several senior positions including as the first Chief Executive of Job Centre Plus and the Permanent Secretary for Crime, Policing and Counter-Terrorism. He retired from his role as Permanent Secretary in 2010. Sir Leigh Lewis is Vice Chair of the homelessness charity, St Mungo’s and Chair of industry body Drinkaware. As Visiting Fellow of the Business School, he has delivered guest lectures to Executive MBA students and contributed to the ‘Big Picture’ series. In 2017 and 2018 he arranged for key speakers to take part in the University’s well-regarded Brexit debates.

Dr Tariq Abbasi MBE

Dr Abbasi has enjoyed a broad career spanning investment banking and real estate development. He received his MBE in 2011 for his work on community cohesion in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Bexley, driven particularly by his leadership of the Greenwich Islamic Centre (GIC) which is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse. In 2015 he received a personal commendation from the Chief of Defence Staff for services to the British Armed Forces. Dr Abbasi has made an outstanding contribution to building community cohesion and inter-faith relations in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

An award-winning journalist, Baroness Wheatcroft has had an illustrious career which included roles as Editor-in-Chief of The Wall Street Journal Europe, Editor of The Sunday Telegraph and City Editor of The Times. She also launched the specialist trade magazine, Retail Week, and served as its consultant editor. She continues to hold several public appointments, including Head of the Forensic Audit Panel and works as a Business Consultant for DLA Piper and as a Member of the Advisory Board for Reuters Institute of the 香港马经论坛 of Journalism.

Dr Nira Chamberlain

Nira is a chartered scientist and mathematician. He was the first black mathematician to feature in Who’s Who and was one of only five mathematicians named by the Science Council in their list of the UK’s top 100 scientists. He has worked in France, the Netherlands, Israel and throughout the UK in industries including defence, aerospace, automotive and energy. Nira is committed to raising aspirations and encouraging the mathematicians of the future. At the 2017 Greenwich Festival of Mathematics, he inspired teachers, school students and graduates with his talk “Black Heroes of Mathematics”.

The Rt Hon Baroness Scotland of Asthal PC

Baroness Scotland has, since 2016, been Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, the first women to hold this office. In 1991 she was the first black woman and youngest ever woman to be appointed Queen’s Counsel. In 1997 she received a life peerage, and subsequently became Minister of State for the Criminal Justice System and Law Reform. During her term of office crime reached its lowest level since 1981. In 2007, she was appointed the first ever female Attorney General for England and Wales, and also for Northern Ireland. Baroness Scotland was the fourth Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, serving from 2014 – 2019. She was a source of inspiration and support to many students, with links to the School of Law where, in 2015, she helped launch the Legal Advice Centre.

An award-winning director and choreographer, Stephen’s work has captivated audiences in theatres across the world. He received the Laurence Olivier Award in 2007 for Best Choreography for Mary Poppins and has also received nominations for his work on several shows including Gypsy, Kiss Me Kate and Singin’ in the Rain. His TV credits include The Tracey Ullman Show, So You Think You Can Dance and Acorn Antiques the Musical. The International Dance Teachers Association has twice awarded Stephen the prestigious Carl Alan Award for his contribution to dance and theatre. He is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds into the arts and as President of Bird College he helps students to develop the skills they need to succeed in a competitive global industry.

Gill Aitkenhead MBE DL

Gill Aitkenhead has enjoyed a distinguished career in public service, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1998 from the Royal Navy following 24 years of service. After leaving the navy, Gill founded the recruitment consultancy Clayworth Adam Ltd. She is currently Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Dunbartonshire, a role which sees Gill working with the royal family on visits to the area. After gaining a Certificate in Education and Youth and Community Studies in 1972 at the university’s predecessor, Dartford College of Education, Gill worked as a PE teacher and youth leader before joining the Royal Navy.

Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson is a successful football manger. His career has included managing clubs all over Europe including Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and England. Roy has also managed the national teams of Switzerland, Finland, United Arab Emirates and England. During this spell England were ranked third in the world. Roy’s place in Crystal Palace history was secured in 2018 when they became the first team to stay up after losing their first seven Premier League games. Roy is an alumnus of the university, having graduated from Avery Hill College in 1972 with a Cert Ed after a two-year course in PE.

The Right Honourable Lord Drayson

Lord Drayson is a labour politician, scientist, industrialist. Founder, chairman and CEO of Drayson Technologies Limited, he pioneered green motorsport racing and sought to adopt new technologies to reduce pollution and combat climate change. Lord Drayson moved into politics in 2003 and he had heled a number of positions in the Ministry Defence and Minister of State roles. He was made Minister of State in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in June 2009.

During Nick Eastwell's career in finance and capital markets law, he has held many prestigious roles and served as the Professional Solicitor of the supreme Court of England and Wales and the Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong. Eight years ago Nick was appointed the Solicitors Regulation Authority's first chief adviser on City law firms. Nick was a member of the University Court for nine years, serving the last four as Vice-Chair of the Court.

Alison Hadley

Director, Teenage Pregnancy Knowledge Exchange, University of Bedfordshire. Alison has dedicated over thirty years to young people’s sexual health and well-being and is an internationally recognised expert in her field. Originally a registered nurse and health visitor, Alison moved into research and education and helped to shape national policy in her role in the Government’s Teenage Pregnancy Unity. Alison developed the Royal College of Nursing’s Sexual Health Skills course, accredited by the University of Greenwich, which has registered over 3,000 health professionals since it was launched in 2004. She was recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours 2010 for services to teenage pregnancy.

Reverend Christine Hardman

Christine Hardman is the Anglican Bishop of Newcastle and only the seventh woman to be appointed Bishop in the Church of England. Christine studied economics at the university's predecessor, Thames Polytechnic, graduating in 1973. She trained for ordination on a part-time basis and in 1994 was ordained as a priest. She became the second female Bishop to join the House of Lords as a Lord Spiritual.

Following the revolution in 1974 under General Spinola, Joao Ribeiro joined a number of his Oporto peers who were sent by their families to London for their undergraduate education. He came to the university when it was the Thames Polytechnic to study in the Business School. After a career in banking, Joao turned his hand to developing the world-renowned Quinta Do Vallado hotel and vineyard in Portugal.

Campaigner, youth work leader and trainer in conflict resolution, gangs work and substance misuse. Junior was named one of the Evening Standard’s 1000 Influential Londoners in 2014 and 2015, Junior Osmond established the Southwark Offenders Support (SOS) project following his own time in prison. Covering twelve London boroughs, including Greenwich, SOS supports former offenders and gang members to mentor young people affected by gang culture. To date, Junior and his team have helped over 18,000 people break free from gang, gun and knife crime. Junior teaches “Meeting the specific healthcare needs of young people” at the University of Greenwich and continues to work with organisations across the country as part of his ongoing commitment to improving the lives of young people affected by crime.

Nina Stibbe

Nina is an acclaimed author best known for her book Love, Nina: Despatches from Family Life which was adapted into a BBC series. Nina moved to London in 1982 to work as a nanny and would write letters home to her sister giving comic insights into 1980s literary London; these letters became the basis for her book. Nina studied at Thames Polytechnic, the university's predecessor, graduating in Humanities and moved into a career in publishing becoming commissioning editor at Routledge.

Governance & Anti-Doping Adviser, International Mixed Martial Arts Federation. An alumna of the University of Greenwich’s predecessor, Dartford College of Education, Michele is a global expert in the field of ethics in sport. As Director of Ethics and Anti-Doping at UK Sport from 1986 to 2004, Michele designed and implemented internationally accepted standards for doping control, results management and education. An accomplished writer, broadcaster and public speaker, Michele was an adviser on ethics and anti-doping for the Independent Sports Review published in 2005. She continues to advise on ethical and integrity issues through her sports business consultancy, Sporting Integrity, which she set up in 2004.

Professor Wicks is a qualified pharmacist and visiting Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Science. He has made tremendous contributions to the university; during his time at Pfizer, many staff came to the university to study on part-time programmes. He has also facilitated support for research programmes at the university contributing over £2m. On leaving Pfizer, he arranged for them to sponsor the Medway School of Pharmacy for five years.

Joanne Bosanquet has achieved distinction in the field of nursing and public health. As Deputy Chief Nurse for Public Health England, she provides essential leadership for specialist nursing and midwifery workforces. In 2012, she was selected as a member of the Health Protection Team for the London Olympics. Her contribution to nursing healthcare was recognised when she was awarded an MBE in 2013.

Howarth Bouis, Director of HarvestPlus, was awarded the 2016 World Food Prize (the Nobel Prize of Food), along with colleagues from the International Potato Center, for his pioneering work in ending global hidden hunger through bio fortification. The latter is the breeding of crops with higher levels of essential nutrients. He is the founder and director of the HarvestPlus program, which is dedicated to promoting nutrition and health by enriching staple food crops with micronutrients.

Ann Brightwell, Patron of Bergman Osterberg Union, is an Olympic gold medallist. At the age of 22, Ann won a gold medal for the 800 meters in the 1964 Tokyo games, breaking the world record. Ann entered a career in teaching after gaining a Certificate in Education from the university's predecessor, Dartford College of Physical Education. In 1965, she was awarded an MBE and in 2009 was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Hargreaves, PT teacher and leading expert in sports sociology and physical education, was trained as a Physical Education teacher at Dartford College, which later became part of the University of Greenwich. She became a pioneer of sport sociology, specialising in gender issues and the politics of the body. Her work is widely published, and many of her texts on sociology of sport remain essential reading for undergraduates on PE and Sport related programmes in universities around the world.

Jason Morgan, Chief Executive at Charlton Athletic Community Trust, started the Charlton Athletic Football in the Community Scheme in 1992. It became Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) in 2003 and is now famed for its work in the region. Jake Pauls, professional ergonomist, is one of the founding fathers of a relatively new area of research- evacuation dynamics. David Rowntree, a Greenwich alumnus, is best known as the drummer for the rock band Blur, one of the most successful bands of the 1990s and a leading force in that decade's "brit pop" movement. Outside of music, David is a computer animator with his own company, Nanomation. More recently he trained to become a solicitor, qualifying in 2012, and he now works in the criminal department of Kingsley Napley.

Pam Schweitzer, writer, theatre director, trainer and lecturer, has spent many years teaching and writing about theatre in education. In 1983 she founded Age Exchange Theatre Trust and was its Artistic Director until 2015. She has devoted the last 30 years to recording and preserving the memories od older people on key themes in the social history of the 20th century. Pam runs the Reminiscence Theatre Archive, based at the university's Bathway Theatre.

Britain's most successful javelin thrower, Steve Backley is the only British Track and field competitor to win medals at three different Olympic Games. Baroness Amos, United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief, was the third woman in history to lead the Upper House of Parliament. She was the Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission (1989-94), and Director of Amos Fraser Barnard (1995-98), advising the South African government on public service reform, human rights and employment equality. She was created a life peer in 1997, and appointed Leader of the House and Lord President of the Council in 2007.

Mr Mustafa, President of the Pakistan National Paralympics Committee and Vice President of the Asian Paralympics Committee, attended Woolwich Polytechnic (now University of Greenwich) from 1952-56. He has served as chief scientist at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, and as a senior government official in Pakistan. HE has also worked for NASA, playing a leading role in developing rocket technology.

The Rt Hon the Baroness Blackstone of Stoke Newington

Baroness Blackstone, Chair of the British Library Board and Great Ormond Street Hospital Trust, started her academic career at the London School of Economics. She went on to become Professor of Educational Administration at the Institute of Education, Deputy Education Officer (Resources) for ILEA and Research Fellow in the Policy Studies Institute, before taking on the role of Master of Birkbeck College. She was appointed to the House of Lords in 1987, and became Minister of State for Education and Employment in 1997. In 2001 she became Arts Minister and was also appointed to Privy Council. After stepping down from government, she joined the university as Vice-Chancellor in 2004, overseeing its growth and consolidating a successful partnership at Medway. On her retirement, she was awarded the Times Higher Education Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ann Cutcliffe OBE has been Vice-Chair and a board member of the British Paralympic Association since 2001. A key figure in the para-equestrian world, Ann was manager of the Great Britain para-equestrian team at the Sydney 2000 Games, where she won a SportcoachUK award in recognition of her work. She was also chief selector for the para-equestrian team at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.

Doreen Lawrence came to the UK from Jamaica in 1960 and married Neville Lawrence in 1972. Their 18-year-old son, Stephen, was murdered in a racist attack near the family's home in south-east London. No one has been convicted for the crime. Mr and Mrs Lawrence led a campaign to bring his killers to justice, a campaign that exposed racism and incompetence in the Metropolitan Police.

Christine McVie is a vocalist. Keyboard player and songwriter who joined the legendary Fleetwood Mac in 1970. Born in Birmingham, she studied sculpture at the local college of Art. Christine began her career in 1968, performing with the bands Chicken Shack and Sounds of Blue, and made enough impact to be voted best female vocalist in the 1969 Melody Maker poll.

Doreen Bird

Doreen Bird has been one of this country's leading teachers of dance since 1945, when at the age of 17 she set up the Doreen Bird School of Dance. This later became the Doreen Bird School of Performing Arts in 1951, with six students enrolling on a full-time three-year course. The school is now internationally recognised as a centre of excellence. The award recognises her services to dance education.

The Rt Hon Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss DBE

Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, Lord Justice of Appeal, progressed through the legal profession marked with distinction. From an initial period of practice at the bar, she was appointed Registrar in the Family Division in 1970, a position she held until being made a High Court Judge in 1979. Between 1987 and 1988 Dame Butler-Sloss became a familiar name in the media as a result of her chairmanship of the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry and again in the following year with her elevation to the Court of Appeal.

Lord Judd is a member of the Migration, Refugee and Demography Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and Chair of its Sub-Committee on Refugees. He is also Chair of the Conflict Resolution Non-Governmental Organisation, International Alert; Senior Fellow of the Independent International Security Think-tank, Saferworld; and Chair of the European Atlantic Group and National President of the YMCA (England).

Richard Ormond

Richard Ormond is Director of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. He was born in Batheaston in 1939, and educated at Christ Church College, Oxford where he graduated with a BA in History. Before joining the National Maritime Museum as head of pictures in 1983, Richard was Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Prior to this he was Assistant Keeper where he undertook research for a two-volume catalogue of Victorian Portraits. He has now been the Director of the National Maritime Museum for thirteen years and plans to retire in the year 2000.

Professor Simon Schama is Professor in the department of Art History at Columbia University. From 1995 to 1998 he was art critic and cultural essayist for The New Yorker Magazine. His art criticism won the National Magazine Award in 1996. He is also winner of the Wolfson Prize for History for Patriots and Liberators: Revolution and Government in the Netherlands 1780-1813 published in 1977; of the NCR Prize for Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution (1989) and the W.H. Smith Literary Prize for Landscape and Memory (1995). His new book, Rembrandt's Eyes is to be published by Penguin Press in October 1999.

Richard Stilgoe OBE and Deputy Lieutenant is best known as an entertainer, having appeared on television in Nationwide and That's Life throughout the 1970s. He has also written lyrics for Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals including Cats and Phantom of the Opera, and for the National Youth Music theatre.

Alan Curbishley

Alan Curbishley, Manager of Charlton Athletic, joined Charlton initially in 1984, and had two spells at the club as a player. He made 69 appearances and scored 6 goals. In the summer of 1987, he moved to Brighton for a fee of £30,000. Alan returned to Charlton Athletic in June 1990, as reserve team coach and player, becoming first team coach in October that year. The following summer Curbishley became joint manager with fellow professional Steve Gritt. The pair steered Charlton Athletic close to the promotional play-offs despite having to play at West Ham's ground due to a financial crisis and the prolonged renovation of the Valley ground.

Professor Higgins is a noted physician, a public servant of distinction and a teacher of vision and foresight. He was born in London in 1923, and attended a Jesuit School, receiving an education that was disciplined, hard and thorough, but which provided him with a perfect training ground for a man who would enter medicine. Peter Higgins began his university studies at the University College London, part of which had temporarily relocated to Bangor because of the War. During this time he was attached to the Royal Fusiliers so his curriculum combined study with military service.

Rosaline Howells was for many years closely involved with the development of the University of Greenwich. As a governor of Avery Hill College, she became a governor of Thames Polytechnic when they merged in 1985, and remained in the post to see the Polytechnic become a university in 1992, finally retiring from formal involvement in 1997. She continues to take a lively interest in the university's affairs, particularly those matters relating to equal opportunities.

Dame Jennifer Jenkins is the daughter of the late Sir Parker Morris and has devoted a large part of her life to both the establishment and the maintenance of standards in our society. Her late father was instrumental in ensuring an adequate standard of housing in this country. The Parker Morris standards for housing applied for some fifty years before being repealed recently by the Government.
